Oscars 2026. From sixteen nominations to four wins – the case of Sinners

Klara, Barbara and Karolina, all 17 , analyse the Academy’s verdict on Ryan Coogler’s film

Sinners entered the 2026 Academy Awards with sixteen nominations and the weight of expectation. Its presence across nearly every major category positioned it as a defining film of the year – but also raised a more difficult question about whether that level of recognition reflected consistent quality, or something more uncertain about the current direction of the industry.

In the studio, Klara Hammudeh, Karolina Jasiówka and Barbara Karsznia approach the film from different angles, but return repeatedly to the same tension. What begins as a reaction to the scale of its nominations quickly develops into a broader discussion about how Sinners should be understood – as a film, as a statement, or as a combination of both.

At the centre of that discussion is the film’s structure. Its blend of historical setting and supernatural elements creates an initial sense of dissonance, but also opens space for interpretation. What might seem like a genre inconsistency begins to function as a metaphor, particularly in relation to questions of cultural appropriation and exploitation.

This symbolic dimension becomes most convincing in the film’s use of music. Certain sequences, especially the barn scene, emerge as points of agreement in the discussion – moments where the film achieves clarity, emotional impact, and a sense of cohesion that is not always present elsewhere.

Beyond these moments, however, the conversation turns more critical. Performances are recognised as strong, yet the distinction between strong and exceptional remains unresolved. Similar doubts appear in relation to narrative structure, where thematic ambition is often seen as coming at the expense of coherence.

The Oscars outcome reinforces this ambiguity. Despite its sixteen nominations, Sinners lost several major categories – including Best Picture – to One Battle After Another, which emerged as the night’s dominant winner. The result complicates the film’s position: widely recognised, but not ultimately decisive.

What emerges from both the discussion and the awards themselves is a film that resists a single reading. Sinners succeeds in generating meaning and debate, but not consensus. Its significance lies less in what it definitively achieves, and more in the questions it leaves unresolved.
